FATAL QUARREL

A tragedy occurred at Smythesdale, near Ballarat. Edward Antonio, aged 20, has been, remanded on a charge of the wilful murder of his father. Christopher Antonio. According to police evidence, the couple were employed in cutting timber, The father was incensed by his son’s asking for a loan of a couple of pounds. A quarrel followed, and the father approached the son, threatening him with an axe in one hand and a bottle in the other. The mother intervened, but was pushed aside. The son seized: a gun, with which he attempted to push or ward his father.off. The gun exploded, and its full charge entered the father’s abdomen.. Death followed in a few minutes. The son; rode into Ballarat and surrendered to the police. Young Antonio claims that shooting of his father was accidental.
