THE COMPTITIONS

FESTIVAL CONCLUDES SATURDAY’S CONCERTS AND PRIZB-GIVING. UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. The seventh annual festival of the "Wellington Competitions Society concluded on Saturday when two demonstration concerts were held. There were crowded houses at "both performances, and the programmes though lengthy were most enjoyable. Of course the Maori Hamua Glee Club with their poi and canoe dances were again immensely popular, but every item was of an ecxeptionally high standard and most enjoyable. CHILDREN’S AFTERNOON. At the afternoon session, composed of children’a events, the- following gave items: —Piano duet, "Morris Dance/' Mieses Lang and Rait; dance duo, "Grotchen and Hans,” Miss Daniels and Master Lockwood; character recitation, "Woman's Rights/’ Master L. Cooley; vocal scholarship, "Star of Eve/' Mi J. T. Gibson; bass eolo. "Though Faithless Men/' Mr R. J. MaAigan. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES SCENE OF ENTHUSIASM. During the evening the president, Mr C. M. Bowden, presented the prizes, aLd made reference to the unqualified success of the competitions this year. He also paid a tribute to thework of Mr .Tenner the secretary; Mr W. P. MacLachlan, tho stage manager and Mr Harold Whittle, the ‘accompanist. The list of special prize winners was as follows: CHAMPIONSHIPS ELOCUTION. Ladies, Miss A. Winkel; gentlemen, Mr Barton Ginger; girls, Miss M. Yates; boys, Master L. Searle. VOCAL. Ladies, Miss Beatrice Aydon. It was announced that Miss M. Elderton had tied with Miss Aydon in point of marks, but'as she had* not entered some of the necessary classes she could not be counted for the championship. Gentlemen, Mr El Swain. SCHOLARSHIPS PIANO. Society's, IS and under 15 years, Miss Vera Tolan; British Piano Co., 15 and under 18 years, Miss M. Muirhead. VOCAL. Society's, men, Mr J. T. Gibson; ladies, Miss B. Aydon; Begg and Co/s, girls, 12 and under 16 years, Miss M. Smith, ELOCUTION. Society’s, ladies (16 and under 21 years), Miss Mavis Ritchie; girls (12 and under 16 years), Miss Madge Yates; boys (12 and under 16 years), Master Bert Goodland. SPECIAL PRIZES. Diamond ring, presented by Mr L. J. Brabin for vocal aggregate, ladies, Mrs Gwen Clayton, for the second year in succession. The Partridge medal, for vocal aggregate, gentlemen, Mr J. T. Gibson. Dancing medal, 9 years and under 12, Miss G. Smyth., Dancing medal (Gillies), 12 years and under 16, Miss J. Marshall. Ellocution aggregate (Mayer and Kean's medal), Mr Barton Ginger. Elocution aggregate (Kaiapoi prize), Miss A. Winkel. Nimmo and Sons shield, for secondary schools choirs, Stewart Dawson shield for children's chorus, and Chas. Begg and Co.'s shield for juvenile choirs, Guilford Terrace Convent Choir. •Special medal, Mr F. Oakes, conductor of the above choir. Chas. Begg and Co.'s shield for choir contest, the Orpheus Choir for the second year in succession; conductor, Mr Clement Howe. Trophy for single poi, Hamua Glee Party No. 2.
