OUR WAR MEMORIAL

A SIX-YEAR-OLD DEBT. THE FINAL INSTALMENT. The campaign for raising £IO,OOO to complete, the estimate of £25,000 for the Wellington Citizens’ War Memorial represents an effort to pay the final instalment of a eix-year-o)a debt. It is a debt which must be paid, fof the only alternative is the filing by the citizens of a petition in moral bankruptcy. But though it may be possible for a business bankrupt to make such an explanation in extenuation of his insolvency as will be satisfactory to his creditors, there can be no salve for our civic conscience if we fail to discharge our obligation to do honour to our war dead. .This is a debt of honour, and a debt of honour is regarded as a first harge on manhood’s estate. The citizens have till November 11th, Armistice Day, in which to find the bsmnoe owing on their account. Direct donations may be sent to the Secretary, War Memorial Fund. Box 199, G. 2.0., Wellington.
