HOTEL LICENSEE’S LIABILITY,
MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS,
Alleging neglect on the part- of the defendant, Frank Swift, a storekeeper, of Napier, claimed the sum of £lO from John Alexander Rosrf m a civil case before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday After evidence had been heard the magistrate entered judgment for the plaintiff for £6 and costs. A notice had been posted in the passageway, His Worship remarked, which said that the licensee would take no responsibility for property lost. This, however, did not relieve him from the liability under the Act. ' This was one of the risks attached to licensees of licensed premises. The -plaintiff claimed the money ns Compensation for the loss of an over coat, a scarf and pair of gloves which were lost at the Grand Hotel in October last, allegedly through the negligenoe or default of the defendant who was at the time licensee of the hotel, at which plaintiff was a guest.
