THE EXHIBITION
LEVY" OF ENTERTAINMENT TAX. STRONG PROTEST MADE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 4. Strong protests have been aroused by the Taxation Department's proposal to levy the entertainment tax on tho Wembley admittances. It is claimed that the Exhibition is exempt, as, firstly, it is a display of industry and production, and, secondly, it largely represents dominion activities, which are not taxable.
The’ proposal to levy the tax is based on the grounds, among others, that Australia’s and New Zealand's cinemas are amusements.
It is computed that the tax, if enforced, would return £260,000, and the payment of this amount would 1 dissipate the remote possibility of the Exhibition yielding a surplus. The dominions would be the chief losers.' and the opponents of the tax urge that th 1 dominions should take up the protest.
