CITY ENGINEER

THE MAYOR’S PROPOSAL “QUITE DISCOURTEOUS TO THE COMMITTEE. ’ ’ CHARGE OBJECTED TO.

On the order paper at the City Council last night was provision for discussing the Mayor’s proposal to invite applications to fill the position of city engineer, and for considering a report from the departmental investigation committee.

Councillor G. Mitohell (chairman of the investigation committee) said the committee took it that the Mayor’s proposal was somewhat of a want of confidence in' the committee, which the committee did not think was justified. He thought it was quite discourteous to the committee. The Mayor: I can’t allow you to say that. I want to say I did not know what the committee was doing. Councillor J. Burns: Were you not invited to go before the committee P The Mayor: No. I brought this motion forward with no hostile intention, but great pressure has been brought on me from outside because of the position we have drifted into. However, after the repoi-t is known there may be no need for my motion. Councillor Mitchell: I accept your explanation. I am a little surprised to hear you* say you were not invited to come before the committee.. It was an understood thing, and it is quite an oversight you were not asked. It was decided to held a special meeting to discuss the report.
