MILK RETURNS

FAILURE TO SEND IN. FARMER BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL. Mrs E. Purchase was to have at* tended last evening's meeting of the Wellington City Council to show cause why her near-by farmers milk license should not be cancelled. Her husband appeared at the meeting, and said the business really was his, and he refused to give returns of milk sold by him because he did not think the council had any right to expect them. Mr Purchase was asked how it was to be ascertained that he was not exceeding the limit. Mr Purchase: I have a full right to sell the whole of my product undet the compromise that was arrived a( in Parliament. Councillor W. H. Bennett (chairman of the milk committee): No. The Mayor said the City Council had done a great deal for the near-by farmers and most of them were doing well. Mr Purchase: No. The Mayor: The council cannot stand by and allow unfair competition. What is to prevent you from injuring the city’s business. Nothing that was said at the time of the compromise can override an Act of Parliament. I advise you, although you feel you are suffering an injustice, to send in your returns under protest. It was resolved to give the vendor another chanoe.
