CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING RESULT OF CONTESTS AT WANGANUI YESTERDAY. PRELIMINARY HEATS. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, January 28 •' The swimming championship meeting was continued to-day and to-night. There was again iino weather, a largo attendance, and excellent swimming. Results : 220 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. First hont.—C. Atkinson (Canterbury), 1; E Bradley (Auckland), 2; L. Fairgray (Auckland), 3. Only starters. Atkinson and Bradley were together for the first two laps, when Atkinson forged ahead and: won by several yards. The third man was a couple of yarde further back. Time, 2min 41 l-ssec. Second heat.—N. Batchelor (Canterbury), 1; E. V. Cunnold (Auckland), 2; C. Claridge (Wellington), 3. Also started— A. Adamson (Hawke’s Bay). Adamson had a slight leadl in the second lap, but Batchelor then took charge and won by a couple of yards from Cunnold, who finished well, with Claridge close up. Time, 2min 43 l-ssec. Third heat. —W. Smith (Auckland), 1; J. Enwright (Auckland), 2; D. Murrell (Wellington), 3. Also started—F. McKeague (Hawke’s Bay). Smith quickly established a lead and was two yards to the good after four lengths had been covered, witlh Enwright second, just a touch ahead of Murrell. There was practically no change to the end. Smith winning by two yards from Enwright, who appeared to he taking things comfortably. Murrell was close up third. Time, 2min 45 4-ssec. Final. N. S. Batchelor (Canterbury) 1 J. The fielid was bunched over most of 'the distance, with Smith in the lead, Batchelor and Enwright were handy. With fifty yards to go Batchelor forged to the front arid with a fast sprint won by a foot from Enwright, with Smith a yard further back. Time, 2min 38 2-5 seo. 75 YARDS INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIP. First heat—M. Farquahar (Auckland), 1; J. Whyman (Wanganui), 2; R. Miller (Otago), 3. Also started —Miss Lynch. From an even break Farquhar soon established a slight lead from Whyman, eventually winai ig oy two yards- Miller three yards further away. Time,- 53 2Second heat —M. Jepson (Otago), 1; A. Mather (Canterbury), 2; D. Brent (Wanganui), 3. Tlso started —A. Potaka and P. Svenson, both of Wanganui. Jepson, with a very fast stroke, went to 'ho front from the jump, and won comfortably. Third heat —P. Page (Auckland), 1; M. Bel] (Auckland), 2; E. Hannan (Canterbury), 3. Also started—B. Grant (Auckland! and M. Ansley( Wanganui). Miss Hannan had a slight lead over the first lap, but Miss Bell then took charge, and tad to within a yard of the finish, being beaten by a touch. Time, 53 2-sseo. Final. W. Jepson (Otago) 1 M. Rose (Hawke’s Bay), W. Watson (Wellington). Lindsay led from ’he 6tart, finally winning easily by 45 yards, with Stokes ten yards further back. Time, 13min 7sec. 50 YARDS JUNIOR GIRLS’ BREASTSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. E. Anderson (Wanganui) 1 S. Breen (Wellington) 2 B. Hammond (Wanganui) 3 The only starterß. This was a close race all the way, Anderson won by a foot, with Hammond close up. Time, 46 3220 YARDS LADIES’ BREAST-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. L L. Friedman (Hawke’s Bay) 1 A Imandt (Wellington) 2 A. Potaka (Wanganui) 3 Only starters. Friedman went to the front at an early stage, and won easily by ten yards. Potaka was four yarde away. Time, 3min 55 2*ssec. 150 YARDS BACKSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. First heat—T. Moorhouse (Wellington), 1; S. Atkinson (Canterbury), 2. Also started —G. Stephens (Auckland), Stockley (South Auckland). Won by several yards, Atkinson just beating Stockley. Time, 2min 4sec. Second heat—N. Batchelor (Canterbury), 1; L. Fairgray (Auckland), 2 Also started—Evatt (Wellington). Batchelor was in front all the way, and won by four yards. Watt gave up after half the distance had been accomplished. Time, 2min 7 8-ssec. final. L Moorhouse (Wellington) 1 L Fairgray 2 N. S.
