WELCOME WEEK

MOTOR-CAR CONTEST. AT NEWTOWN PARK. The Welcome Week motor-car contests, held at Newtown Park last night, attracted several thousand people, who witnessed some fine exhibitions of driving. Unfortunately, it was discovered that so many cars had entered that it was impossible to get through the contemplated programme. Following are, however, a few of the results:— Heavy car championship—Moncrieff (Buick), 210 points, and Pickering (Buick), 210 points, equal; Carter (W.K.), 195 points, third. Ladies’ contest—Miss Downs (Jewett), 159 points, 1; Mrs Bell (Overland) and Miss Lawton (Dodge), 150 points, equal. Youths’ class—A. Mitchell, 187 goin'ts, I; Suisted, 184 points, 2; neddon, 172 points, 3. TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME. To-day, the closing day of "Welcome Week, the final of the Sanders Cup contest is to take place on the harbour ; while in the evening at Newtown Park the five-mile harriers’ championship will be competed for; a number of interesting cycle races are to be run; and the carnival underhand chopping handicap and other events will be brought off. There will also be the usual band music, jazzing, dancing in the open air, comedy shows, side-shows, tight-rope-walking, and so forth. Cycle races postponed from Thursday will Be held to-night; and the motor-car -tests, postponed from last night, will be held this evening.

THIS EVENING’S PROGRAMME

END OF WELCOME WEEK CARNIVAL. A very high-class programme of events is set down for this evening at Newtown PaTk, and that finished, the Welcome Week Carnival will he at an end. There have beeu some very keenly contested events during the week, and despite unfavourable weather conditions on some occasions, everybody has had a moat enjoyable time. To-night’s Carnival underhand chopping handicap^—carrying £25 in prize money —is causing a great deal of interest, as it is expected that many of our best axemen will he seen dealing with the 16-inch logs. Also on the bill of fare, and causing a lot of excitement, are the five mile harriers championship with £8 for the first three home, and the ir,-!e relay race worth £2 to the winners. There will be numerous other events arranged, and between events there will be good comedy shows, music, dancing, side shows, etc. This premises to bo the best night of the week. Go along, and you can feel sure of a real good night’s sport.
