TROTTING RAGE SGANOAL i POLICE SAY THEY HAVE “LATER INFORMATION.” ACCUSED FURTHER REMANDED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 25. Later information received by the police has led to another remand in the trotting case. The five men arrested were before the court this morning. William Williamson, William Percy Capos, Charles llopwuod j Capes, Janies Golding, and Walter Medley Hulston were charged with conspiring to defraud the Southland Racing Club by entering a trotting horee named Willie Lincoln in the Oreti Harness Trot at tho meeting on January 2nd under tho false name “Look Out.” Williamson was charged separately with attempting to obtain £153 from a client by representing that the horse Willie Lincoln was a trotting horse known as Look Out. Chief Detective Cameron asked for a remand till February Ist at Christ church. Mr A. L. Hobbs, who appeared for all the accused, objected. He stated that the polios had informed the magistrate in Dunedin that the final remand would be to Dunedin on January 31st, when the police would he prepared to go on with the case. The chief detective said, they had reoeived later information that morning, and in accordance with the wishes of the Dunedin police, asked for a remand till Friday next, when the date of the hearing at Dunedin would probably be fixed. The magistrate granted the remand. Mr Hobbs asked for bail, and in view of ihe number of remar.ds, requested that the amount should be as light as possible. The magistrate said the seriousness of the offence, and not the number of remands, was the test of the quantum of bail. The accused would be admitted to bail of £2OO, and one surety of £2CO. On the second charge against Williamson, a second surety would be necessary. Mr Hobbs asked if Golding could be admitted on his own recognisance. Ho had received bail on those terms in Dunedin. The magistrate said he must find a surety.
