TITAHI BAY

POLICY OF PROGRESS RESIDENTS FROM PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. RECREATION AND SANITATION. An enthusiastic meeting of residents of Titalii Bay took place the other evening, the small hall attached to the local store being overcrowded, when it w-as decided to form a Progressive Association. Mr L. U. Chaffey, who convened the meeting, said that he had; come to a realisation that more interest would have to be taken in he welfare of the Bay, if it was to enjoy the splendid reputation that it had gained. During the holidays, fully double the number of people were present than had formerly been the case, and l it was necessary, therefore, for something to be done in the way of better conveniences, and that kind of thing. " A RECREATION GROUND. Mr Chaffey also thought that the time had arrived, when definite steps should be taken in the matter of acquiring a suitable area for a recreation ground. The Bay was rapidly fillingup with houses, and there would soon be very little land available for air spaces. Now was the time to secure .an adequate area at a reasonable price, and it was for the local residents to decide what was to be done. It was pointed out by Mr Chaffey, that the formation of the Association was not antagonistic to the Makara County Council, but it was felt that with such a large area to cater for, the members of the Council did not quite realise the importance of Titalii Bay, and that ia woudld be helpful, rather than otherwise, for residents to bring under attention, in a concrete way, the various improvements that were really necessary to make the Bay the attractive spot that it should l he. SANITATION: A SEPTIC TANK. Mr Sidney Jackson, who had made a special visit to the Bay for the purpose of enlightening residents in regard to what should he done in respect to sanitary arrangements, gave a brief outline of a moderate scheme, and suggested the installation of a septic thnk. He also stated, that a larger size of pipe should be put in for the supply of water. Mr Jackson thought that a permanent man was really necessary during the summer months to look after the roads and channels, and to patrol the beach. Mr E. Windley, the Chairman of the Makara County Council, who attended as a ratepayer, explained that it was not possible to do very much more for Titalii Bay with the rates at present available, and lie suggested that if Titahi Bay residents wished for special facilities, they should have a special rating area created, and thus be in a position to raise the necessary funds. On being put to the meeting, the idea was carried by an overwhelming majority, and it was decided that the Executive should take this matter up with the County Council. It was also decided that steps be taken in the mat. ter of securing a suitable recreation ground. Mr Eric Johnston, brought under notice the question of beautifying the Bay by planting suitable trees, and it was decided that the Executive should also go into this matter. Mr Botliamley promised a donation of fifty Ngaio trees, and Mr Johnston offered to see that these were planted. The following officers were elected : Patron, Mr W. H. Field, M.P.; President, Mr Will Appleton; Vice-Presi-dents, Messrs B. Eynneberg, W. J. Carman, H. C. Huunter; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr L. U. Chaffey; Executive, Professor Somerville, Messrs J. F. Forrester, B. Mapplehack, Eric Johnston, W. Shock, and T. W. Witt.
