At the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society, held at Carterton on Saturday, the treasurer's statement showed that receipts since the last meeting had been £215. The overdraft at date was £1528, the general aooount was in d’Ht £1862, the hall account debtor £3paddock account debtor £1907, and the mortgage and deposit account £2500. The secretary reported that by an Act passed last session authority wa6 given for A. and P. Society grounds to be revalued. The unimproved value of the Carterton showgrounds had been reduced to one-half, which meant a reduction of £22 per annum in rates. The secretary of the Wellington Carnival Committee wrote stating that it was proposed to hold a winter show in Wellington in July, and asking the society to appoint representatives to attend further meetings to arrange details. It was mentioned by members that when the proposal for a winter show was before the meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society last month, the proposal was received in different light to the view now being taken by the Wellington Carnival Committee. The question of a winter show was a matter that would requirs a good deal of finance, and, therefore, should not be rushed into. It was decided that as the proposal has developed on totally different lines from those which the committee were led to believe, without a discussion with the promoters of the proposed ehow ? the society is not prepared to commit itself to any liability. Furthermore, owing to the inopportune time for which the meeting of delegates is called, it will not be possible for representatives of the society to be present. The Department of Agriculture wrote in reference to the appointment of a Government veterinary officer whose services would be available to farmers in the Tower end of the Wairarapa, stating that there was not at the present time any likelihood of the department Tooating an additional veterinary officer in the Wairarapa. It was stated in the letter that the fact, should not be overlooked that it is not the function of a Government veterinary officer to attend to cases of ordinary ailments of live stock, his duties being those of investigation and treatment of contagious diseases.
