THE SPORT OF RAGING

CONCLUSION OF SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING CHIEF EVENT WON BY MANTUA CENERAL NOTES AND COMMENTS

FIXTURES Nov. 28 and 30 —Feilding J.C. Spring. Nov. 30 and Dec. I—Tqkapuna J.C. Spring Dec. 5 and 6—Woodville J.C. Summer. Dec. B—Methven ICC. Annual. Dec. B—Bay of Plenty J.C. Annual. Dec. 12—Dannevirke ICC. Summer. Dec. 12— Taumarunui R.C. Annual. Dec. 26, 28, Jan.. 1 and 2—Auckland *.C. Summer. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Carbine.”) Feilding on Wednesday and Friday. The mares booked to Arrowsmith this season include: Bonny Briar, Gipsy Gold, Miss Deval, Statuette, Taiparoa, Rarania, Lady Genera], Sweet Tipperary, Dainty Step, Sarah Grand, Lady Vladimir, Arras, Jean Laddo, Ambitious, Gold Top, Derelict, Sea Battery,. Sleeping. Beauty, Going Up, Rada, Sinapis, Oratress, Hellenise, Gladioli, Aria, and Ixiyal Aroh. The two-year-old filly Lava is etill running in the paddock, enjoying a rest after her* recent racing. J. Lindsay will probably take her in hand again shortly with a view to having her ready for holiday engagement*, probably at the Dunedin Jo'ckey Club’s Christmas meeting. Winkie’s Best is moving along nicely in his work. He will probably have his first race a-t Methven, and later in the season he may be worth following, ae he shapes like being useful. Gloaming is now being ridden. He has already, done a lot of useful pacing while being exercised on the lead, and if all goes well with' hiip, he should he in good order for sprint races later in the season. He is engaged In the Middle Park Plate, which will be an easy race for him to win, if he is nearly at his best, as he will have no penalty, and will thus be meeting the best of his opponents with a big pull in the weights. The two English fillies which Mr W. G. Hobbs has in work for Mr J. B. Reid are getting through plenty of steady work on the Riccarton tracks. W. G. Hobbs is not hurrying his team at present, but Palestrina, Wink, and Jubilant v.ill be go't ready to carry Mr G. Gould's colours at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting. Red Kriss is the latest hurdle recruit at Riccarton. He shaped all right in a turn over the pony hurdles last week. Scion, Quest, and Gazeworthy are engaged at the Woodville meeting, Scion raced unsuccessfully on the same course last year prior to winning tho Auckland Cup. Income, who has been off the scene since last autumn, has been nominated for the Woodville meeting. He is in the sprint race on the first day and the Gothard Memorial Handicap, one mile and a distance, on the second day. He was a good performer over long journeys last season. At the Auckland summer meeting he was third in the Auckland Oup with Bst Sib, won the Summer Oup with 9st, and ran second in the Racing Club Handicap with 9st. Anomaly has been placed in J. Hymer’s stable at Riverton in order to get the benefit of the soft going on the beach and swimming exercise. The King Mark gelding requires a good deal of work to get him into top form, so he may be expected: to show improvement later in the season. There was a strong New Zealand flavour about the Zetland Hurdle Handicap at a meeting held at Victoria Park, Sydney, this month. The winner, Kilwa, an aged gelding by Kilbroney from Divinia, was ridden by T. Museen, who commenced his racing career at Riccarton, as an apprentice in the stable of G. Murray Aynsley. Royal Star, looking bright and well after his recent racing, is being kept foing in useful tasks, .with a view to oliday engagements. The Was'hdyke course was very hard on Friday for the opening day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Probably this accounted for the jumping being so had in the hurdle race (says the “Lyttelton Times”). Likelihood lost a lot of ground through running down the last three ohetacles in the Otaio Hurdle Handicap. The jar of the hard ground probably was responsible for him trying to shirk the hurdles. Had he jumped straight he would have won very easily. Humboldt made his first appearance as a hurdler on Friday. He ran a good race, and will pay his way among the jumpers if he only remains sound, which is, however, doubtful. He appeared! to ho very sore when he pulled up. Bon Spec performed in the Otaio Hurdle Handicap like a horse who was tired of the business. Integrity, the winner of the Spring Stakes at South Canterbury, is a three-year-old half-sister to Lignum. It was her first success, but she should earn more money before the seaoon is much older. Tho Wingatui-trained, gelding Baldown put up a very attractive performance when he won the Teachemaker Handicap. It is true he carried onlv a lightweight, but he was not ridden to the beet advantage. He covered a lot of ground on the turns. Half a mile fror.-; Some he was last ar.d was being ridden hard, being apparently beaten He stuck to nis work gamely and finished strongly, having the race won a furlong fiom home. Boadicea has done a lot of hard racing this season, and 3he has been very consistent. She ran up to her best form in the Tescheonaker Handicap, and it was no disgrace to be beaten by Baldowa at the weights. Warhue would not hit out at the start of his race at South Canterbury on Friday, but ho finished, very strongly. He is an improving horse. Happy Warrior was too sore to do himself justice at the South Canterbury meeting on Friday. Solferite, the winner of the Maiden Plato at South Canterbury, is a very speedy galloper. It was his first win, hut he showed so much brilliancy in the early stages that he can be marked for another win before long. Sprinkler was a hot favourite for his race at South Canterbury on Friday and he never looked iri serious danger of defeat. He ran through early to get a position with a fine dash and he was staying on well, though probably a seven furlong jouiney is as far as he likes at present.

Sporting men throughout the Dominion will regret to hear of the death at Wingatui on Thursday of V. 11. Coleman, at one time a well-known oross-country horseman. During hie career as a jockey the deceased never won any big races, but it is oil record that he had more than his share of bad accidents. The Socdete de Sport de France, which runs the Le Tremblay meeting, caters specially for apprentices, and many famous French riders made thoir debut on that track. In order to induce trainers to put lads up, the society offer prizes of 200, 100, 60, and 40 sovs to those whose apprentices have ridden most winners. This scheme has its counterpart in New Zealand by certain races being reserved for apprentice jockeys only. Mr C. Giesler has been appointed handioapper to the Gore Racing CTu'b. TORSES DISQUALIFIED MISUNDERSTANDING CAUSED. MR HANNON EXPLAINS. CBy Telegraph.—Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, November 25. Tile situation arising from the disqualification . of Quinette . and Abbey Sell for first and second money in the two-year-old race on the second day of the Hamilton meeting has led to misconstruction of the facts of the case. On this Mr Hannon makes a statement to the effect that he did not apply for allowances on the first day, as he was of opinion that he was not entitled to any. On the second day, he had not claimed an allowance for Quinette, which horse he saw weighed out. When Tuohey, the apprentice rider of Al?hey Bell, went to the scale, he inquired of the clerk of the scales if he was entitled to an allowance. The latter said that he would inquire of the stipendiary steward, and came back with the information that he oould claim it, which Tuohey did. The boy intimated the position to Mr Hannon, who also made inquiries of the stipendiary steward, and was advised that he was entitled to an allowance, as the event was a handicap. It was then that Quinette was brought back, and Holland got 2Jlb. It was on the advice he had received that he acted, though he was of the opinion, as his previous actions showed, that he was not entitled to it. ELLERSLIEJTRACK WORK GALLOPS ON SATURDAY.
