CORNWALL FROM LIVERPOOL The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Cornwall sailed from Liverpool on Monday last for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff, and is due at the northern port on December 31st. OMANA DUE SUNDAY. The Lamb steamer Omana left Newcastle on Monday night for Wellington with a cargo of hardwood. She is due here on Sunday morning, and after putting out part cargo, will proceed to Wanganui to complete discharge. Messrs Chas. McArthur and Co. are the local agents. 4 KENT RETORTED. The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Kent from Liverpool arrived at Colon on Monday last, and sailed from Panama on Tuesday for New Zealand ports. The Miarinje Department advise that tho Government steamer Tutanekai sailed yesterday afternoon for southern lighthouses. She is due back in three weeks’ time. WAITEMATA TO SAIL. The Union Company’s freighter Waitemata leaves Wellington to-day for San Francisco and Vancouver to load for New Zealand ports. Her probable calls will be Napier, Wellington, and New Plymouth. ISLAND TRADE. Tho Union Company’s Island steamer Tofua, from. Auckland and Suva, arrived iu Apia on Wednesday last, and was to have left yesterday for Vavau, Haapai, and Nukualofa. TAHITI CLEARS SAN FRANCISCO. The Union Company announce that the R.M.S. Tahiti leaves San Francisco' today for Wellington, via Papeete and Rarotongo. She is due at Wellington on December 14th. THE FOREST HOME. The schooner Forest Home, recently purchased by Messrs Holm and Co., and now being refitted at Wellington, went on the Patent Slip, yesterday to have a uew mast fitted. R.M.S. MAUNGANUI. The Union Companv advise that tho R.M.S. Maunganui left Sydney on Thursday last for Wellington, and is due here on Monday. She clears this port on Tuesday afternoon for San Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. THE WHAKATANE. The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Whakatane, which is at present loading in Australia for the United Kingdom, arrived at Rockhampton on November 20th from Townville. THE PAKEHA. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advise that the Pakeha arrived in Wellington last night from Gisborne to continue loading for the United Kingdom. The remainder of her itinerary has not yet been announced. lONIC FORI LYTTELTON, Tho lonic, which is loading in Wellington, will, according to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, leave here on Tuesday for Lyttelton. She sails from there on Thursday for Southampton via Honto Video and Ttenetiffe. CARGO FROM TEXAS. Tho steamer Royal City, 5114 tons, sailed from Port Artnur, Texas, on October 23rd with cargo for Wellington and Australian ports. The vessel, which is coming to the agency of Mr E. G. F. Zohxab, is due at Wellington on December Ist. She is bringing general cargo and case oil. MOTOR LINER FOR UNION COMPANY. The latest motor liner in the world is being constructed for the Union Steamship Co. of Now Zealand at the Faigfield Shipbuilding Co.’s pards. She will be 600 feet in length by 72 feet beam, thei engines being of tho Sulzer type, driving four screws. The displacement of the new vessel, which is to be called the Aorangi (the Maori name for Mount Cook, New Zealand), will bo 20,000 tons. Tho installation of internal combustion engine will allow for tho accommodation of a greater number of passengers than if steam turbines had provided the motive power; 400 first-class passengers will be carried and 520 third-class. The accommodation is to be very comfortable, including many single and two-berth cabins, and a number of cabins with private bathrooms, Two electric lifts for passengers will run to the boat deck, whero a gymnasium is to bo provided. There will also be ice-oream and soda fountains. The Aorangi, which will be engaged in tho trans-Pacifio trade, will bo capable of a continuous speed of 17 knots, thus making the trip to America in 18 days. The former Aorangi, also owned by the Union Company, was built in 1883, and vas well-known in Sydney before the war. She was engaged for rnanv years on the mail service to 'Frisco.

MAKURA FOR AUCKLAND. The Union Company advise that the R.M.S. Makura, from Vancouver, is due at Auckland at daylight to-day, and sails on Saturday for Sydney. APPOINTMENT FOR NEW ZEALAND CAPTAIN. Captain Cornwall, R.N.R., one of tho two R.N.R. aides to His Majesty, has been appointed to Portsmouth to take the senior officers' course, He is best known in this the world as one of tho senior captains of tho New Zealand Shipping Company’s fleet. He joined the R.N.R-. in 1697 as a sub-lieutenant, and was promoted lieutenant four years later. Ho did his twelve months in the old sloop Pheaton in Pacific waters, and was promoted commander in 1911, though he had long been a commander of a mail steamer. He volunteered for active service directly war broke out, but was much too useful where he was. In 1916, however, his repeated applications to be employed in naval work produced the command of the 600 oils s.y. Amal- ■ thaea,- belonging to the late Sir George Assheton Smith, a command he held for eighteen months, when he was transferred to take over H.M. armed cruiser Woodcook, renamed by the way Woodnut, to prevent confusion with the gunboat in China waters employed on patrol andboarding work.
