A POINTS OECISION BLACKBURN beaten in a close CONTEST. MeCORMAC BEATS McRAE. Before a big crowd cf spectators at the Town Hall last night, Eugene Volaire defeated Clarrie Blackburn. The fight -went the full fifteen rounds, and Volaire got the decision on points. The conteet was fought mostly at J close quarters, and was not by any means uneven. Volaire, however, held an advantage all the way. In the tenth round Volaire had Blackburn very eick, but was not over eeveTO on him until he recuperated. Volaire was going tho stronger of tho pair at the finish. Volaire's weight was given as 10.3, and Blackburn’s as 10.1^. BOUT DESCRIBED FIGHTING AT CLOSE QUARTERS. The first round was willing, but was confined largely to infighting, in which there were no hits of much consequence. Volaire landed heavily to Blackburn’* body early in the second round, and Blackburn shortly afterwards rushed Volaire to the ropes, but Volaire came away and tho pair closed, Volaire scoring neatly in the in-fighting. Fighting at close quarters wa6 resumed ia the third. The pair separated, and Volaire feinted cleverly, and camo in fasi with a clean left to the side of the head. Blackburn went to the ropes, but managed to plant a couple of short ones to Volaire’s bead. The fourth round was much the same as the other rounds, and Volaire scored with two direct rights before the end of the round. In the fifth Volaire put Blackburn on the ropes and thumped awav at him. but Blackburn took most of the attack on, his guard and eventually got out, only to be sent to the rope« again* where Volaire continued the fight. Blackburn cut Volaire’s _ eye m the sixth, but the round was Volaire's, and towards the end of it he swung a good right to Blackburn's, head. The seventh was mainly in-fighting, an«. at the outset of tho eighth Blackburn cut Volaire’« other eye. There were more direct hits in this round than in the previous sessions, and of these Volaire landed a majority. Volarie opened the ninth with ft right swing to the head, and a little later landed with the other hand. The twelfth was unexciting, and the thirteenth was Volarie’s all the way. He was on the attack the whole time, and scored frequently. . Blackburn did better in the fourteenth, and the final round opened evoni \y t but saw Volaire going strongly and attacking vigorously at the gong. The decision went to Volaire. THE PRELIMINARIES A KNOCK-OUT. J. Gierrv (8.13) knocked out A. McArthur (8.9) with a right cross to the chin half-way through the first round CARROLL BEATS PEARCE. M. Carroll (7.13) met TV. Pearce (B.l>, and in the three rounds did all the leading, and, getting all over his opponent. won all the way. The loser saw the contest out gamely. ANOTHER KNOCK-OUT. W. Brown (19.8) and J. Bradley (9.12J> milled furiously for a round and a half, when. Brown won on a knock-out. MeCORMAC BEATS McRAE. A. McCormac (10.8) and C. Mcßae (14.7) were matched for six rounds. McCormao was in trouble in the last two rounds, but the crowd cheered him for the way in which he fought on, and the decision was given in his favour. COOK BEATS MAGILL HEAVYWEIGHT CONTEST.
