JEWELLERS ALARMED
JEWEL ROBBERIES HEAVY LOSS IN NEW YORK. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 29, 10.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 28. Declaring that they are menaced with extinction, owing to the unprecedented number of hold-ups and robberies of jewellers’ shops in the last nine months, in which the losses exceed 500,000 dollars, a protective committee representing every branch of the jeweller’s trade in New 'York, has been organised, and has voted a subscription of 250,000 dollam to be spent on the protection of its members Ono of the simplest and most effective methods of robbery has been to hurl a stone wrapped in a newspaper into a shop .window in broad daylight, seize a try of gems, and make away in an automobile. Few of the perpetrators of such robberies have been apprehended;.
The jew r eßers are considering the installation of steel wire gja&s windows and other devices to save their property.
