"INSANE UNDERTAKING”"
DARDANELLES AND SHIPS ALONE
ADMIRAL STURDEE’S OPINION.
Australian and "M Z. C*nbi«
LONDON, October 26.
Responding to the toast of the Navy at tlie Master Cutlers’ feast at Sheffield. Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee said, in reference to an ex-Minister’s newspaper articles about the Navy's work at the Dardanelles, that he found the writer criticising one of the great admirals in command of the fleet at that time. Admiral Sturdee did not think that was quite fair. His personal view was that to attempt to force the Dardanelles with ships alone was one of the most insane things ever done for the British Empire, and was against all our principles of warfare, and all our experience. It was not. however, in the interests of the public that when discussing these matters. Ministers should make public what was private correspondence.
The ex-Minister referred to i? * -robnbly Mr Winston Churchill, who was First Ixird of the Admiralty in tho early stages of the war, and not long since published articles reviewing the naval history of the war which created a stir in England.
