ARRESTED FOR MURDER
EX-POLICEMAN SHOT.
MISTAKEN FOR A BURGLAR
By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copvrißht. MELBOURNE, October 27. Lancelot. Johnson, charged with the murder of Leonard Harding, has been remanded till November 2nd, hail being refused. The police .statement asserts that Johnson was living apart from his wife, and engaged Harding to collect evidence with a view to divorce proceedings, and that the shooting followed a quarrel between the men. Johnson’s advocate contended that Harding was mistaken for a burglar.
Johnson alleged, when first arrested, that he was in a wine saloon when, in the early hours of the morning, he heard somebody fopeting an entry. Thinking it was a burglar, he went to the kitchen, armed with a revolver. He said he looked from tho window, and saw three men scaling a fence. As tho door was hurst in lie fired, and then discovered that he had shot Harding. an ex-policeman, who was a friend of his.
