COTTON PEST
RAVAGES OF BOLL WEEVIL. EFFORTS TO EXTERMINATE IT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 28, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 26. The national conference on the boll weevil at New Orleans adopted a programme for combating the pest, which experts declare can be controlled by the intelligent application of arsenic. Governor Parker, of Louisiana, states the use of sulphur is more advisable. The speakers declared that 97 per cent, of the cotton-growing area in the United States was already infested, and more than 80 per cent, of the cotton was destroyed annually. The Federal Government is being called upon to extend its aid. The pest is being declared a national evil, with the possibilities of dire consequence to the nation as a whole. Already 933 experiment stations for the vstudy of the weevil have been established, and the conference expressed its intention to establish 5000 more stations during the year.
