DRUNK IN CHARGE OF GAR
HEAVY FINE FOR DRIVER
A heavy fine of £lO in default one month’s imprisonment, was inflicted by Mr E. Pag?, S.M., at tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a middle-aged man, Victor Carmine, who admitted being under tho influence of drink whilst in \-*harge of a motor-car. Sub-Inspector Cummings explained that Carmine was found on the Hutt road near Ngahauranga. on a race l»ight. He had driven in from Trentham, which fact was relied on by Mr O'Donovan, representing accused,* who romarkc-d that it appeared strange that the man could drive right from Treii tham to Ngahauranga if ho was in. such a state of helpless drunkenness as described by the police. In imposing the fine the magistrate allowed a week in which to pay.
