IN POSSESSION OF OPIUM

Following upon a police raid upon the premises of an elderly Chinaman named Shum Get, this latter made an appearance before Mr E. Dago, S.M., a-, the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with having in. his possession opium in a form suitable for smokCollector of Customs. Mr G. T. IV. Mdjaurin, explained that the officers were kept outside the house for about 10 minutes, and on the door being opened accused threw' a parcel over their heads, which ultimately turned out to be '‘seconds.” From the box the defendant endeavoured to show that he had taken the opium for a bad eye. His Worship intimated that ar. offence of this kind called for a heavy penalty, and accordingly a fine of £2O apd costs was imposed, default, being fixed at one month’s imprisonment.
