YESTERDAY’S SITTING A LENGTHY LIST. A lengthy list of police and summons oases were dealt with by Mr E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterdi^.*. A fifth lapse of drunkenness placed William Murphy, alias Tyler, under the obligation of forfeiting a fine of £2, or spending seven days in custody. A prohibition order was also issued for a period of twelve months. ALLEGED THEFT OF DIAMOND. Electing to be tried by a jury, an elderly man, Judah Barsht, who was charged with the theft of a diamond valued at £6 15s, the property of Flora Battersby, and with obtaining the sum of 10s by means of false pretences, was remanded to a later date to appear at the Upper Court. A SERIOUS OFFENCE. _ A further remand .was granted to the 31-st inst. in the case of Arthur AJphonso -Silvester Joseph Everitt, proceedings against whom would be commenced, said Chief-Detective Kemp for the alleged indecent assault of i male at Eastbourne on September 18th last. MORE THEFT CHARGES. Appearing for sentence, after having pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing scrap-iron, valued at £5 7s 6d, the property of J. J. Niven andi Co., George James Griffiths was admitted to probation for a period of two years, restitution to be made to the above firm, his employers. For the alleged theft, at Gisborne, of a brief-bag, valued at £4 10s, Leonard Cyril Ferguson was remanded until Friday next. SUMMONS OASES. Leonora Parker was fined 10s and costs for the breach of a. prohibition order. On two charges of erecting scaffolding involving a fall of 12ft without first complying with the regulations governing fee erection of such structures, William Connon was fined £2 and costs on each of the two counts. For keeping bis shop open .after 7 o’clock, which hour was the department’s specified closing time for the class of business, A. Gower was fined. £2 and costs. The adjourned case of Hubert Bur-’ nett, solicitor, of Woodville, who waflj prosecuted by the Commissioner ofi Taxes for failure to supply correct in-j come returns, resulted in the offender (being fined £lO and costs. Described as the first of several prosecutions to he proceeded with against 1 companies which have been carrying on’ business without the renewal of annual licenses, of which there were 218 in March last year, the Johnsonville Land Company, Ltd., and’the New Zealand Poultry Co-operative Company, Ltd.,were fined £lO and costs and £3 and costs respectively.
