The Tliorndon baths in Murphy street are now in oourse of construction, and In a few months’ time will fill a longfelt want in that district. The baths are well designed, and! will be lavishly fitted, but it is a pity that greater provision has not been made for accommodating the public at carnivals, says the annual report of tho Wellington Swimming Centre. That body records its thanks for tho help of the various bodies, notably the Sports Protection League, that assisted to boost the provision of baths.

Tho increased price for butter-fat does not alter the wages paid by some dairymen to their employees. The other day, in the Feilding district, a young man called on a dairy farmer who was in quest of a milker (says the Wanganui “Herald”). The prospective employee naturally inquired the wages and was told that they would ho Xss per week for a start and rise to 20s if suitable. “And what time do you start in the morning?” queried the modest young man. “Four o’clock,” replied the farmer. And then some dairymen wonder why they are not able to retain their men!

In view of the increased demand that has lately been made for Oamaru stone, it may be mentioned that, in September, 1875, Mr W. N. Blair, C.E., read a paper before the Otago Institute, in ■which he said: “The use of the Oam atu stone is ooeval with the settlement of the district, but it was little known beyond till 1896, when an export trade commenced with Dunedin. The first large building erected of this stone in the city of Dunedin was tho University. Tho Oamaru stone occupies that large tract of country in the northern partof tho province of Otago oxtending northward from the Kakawui to tho Waitaki plain, and inwards from the coast to the Kurow river. Not only can largo blocks ho got of tho same tint and consistency, but whole cities might be built, in which one stone could not bo distinguished from , another.”
