WESTMORELAND MISSING. MUCH DAMAGE ON SHORE. (Sydney “Sun” Cable.) (Received October 25, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. October 24. Great storms have been sweeping tho Atlantic for the past fortnight, and numbers of steamers have suffered damage. The British_ steamer Westmoreland sent out the S.O.S. signal on Monday night, asking for help speedily, as her lifeboats had been washed away. The vessel has not been reported since, and the worst is feared. She carried a complement of 80. VESSELS DAMAGED PIERS RIPPED APART. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. The North Atlantic coast has been visited by one of the worst storms on record in recent years, causing much damage to property and krtjS of life, the extent of which has not yet been determined. Sea walls have been washed away, piers ripped apart, bouses along the shores damaged, and roadways washed out, under the influence of a 48-hour downpour, combined with an 80 miles an hour gale. The schooner McDonald foundered. The crew was rescued. The steamer Maracaibo, a's well as ten smaller vessels, came into port badly damaged. The British steamer Westmoreland is reported missing, with a crew of 80. The Federal Shipping Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Westmoreland referred to above is not the vessel that visits New Zealand periodically from Eng land. She has reported “All’s well/* and is due in London on Sunday.
