SCHOOL DESTROYED
MYSTERY FIRE NEAR ASHBURTON.

ASHBURTON, October 25. Tho Mayfield school, twenty miles from Ashburton, a wooden building, forty years old, was destroyed by fire this morning. Residents discovered the school burning fiercely between 4 and 5 o’clock, and it was impossible to save anything. AH the school records, trophies for gardens (for which the school was famous), also equipment, were totally destroyed. The cause of the fire is a mystery. This school accommodates seventy pupils. The headmaster (Mr C. \V. Withell) recently retired with an enthusiastic farewell, and was succeeded by Mr P. C. Heath, of Waikato, pending whose arrival, Mrs W. Miller v'ae in charge relieving. Everything was left perfectly safe overnight. It is a significant fact that the inspector was due to-day to hold examinations.
