In the early hours of the morning Lancelot Johnson, a boarder in a wine saloon in North Melbourne, heard sounds of somebody forcing an entry. He went to the kitchen armed with a revolver, and saw a man who proved to be an ex-policemian, Leonard Harding, entering He fired, mortally wounding Harding.

Tho police allege that Johnson stated he had shot Harding by mistake. He said he heard sounds downstairs, and looked from the window and saw three men scaling the back fence. He went to tho kitchen, and as the door was burst in he fired, and discovered he had shot Harding, who was a friend of his.

Johnson lias been charged with murder.
