THE NEW TUNNEL
AND “THE HOLE IN THE HILL.”
(To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”)
Sir, —The Eastern Suburbs League is to bo congratulated upon its decision to enter an emphatic protest against the totally inadequate width of the proposed tunnel through Mount Victoria. The people of the Eastern suburbs Lave suffered enough inconvenience through the present miserable little“ hole in tho hill ,, without having the same blunder perpetuated for all time in the new tunnel. The council is planning borad arterial roads through tho city, recognising the necessity to take time by the forelock ; yet it does not appear to have enough, vision to see that to join up an 80ft road to a 66ft r&a*d by a road running through the hill only 27ft Gin wide, blocked by two lines of trams, will only lead to disaster. To sav that the cost will be prohibitive is only begging the question. The «um of £167,000 has been voted by the people for this 'important work; and no one yet appears to have the slightest information “in regard to the oo&t of the proposed ■tunnel. There is a shrewd suspicion abroad that the council intends to ■build a road to KUbirnie from the eastern portal and charge the cost to the tunnel loan. It is to be hoped that this preposterous proposal is only m rumour. TUNNELLER, Wellington, October 26th.
