AGE OF ENTRY

RAILWAY APPRENTICESHIPS,

EXTENSION OF AGE

The Wellington Technical Education Board had asked Mr R. W. McVidly (General Manager of Railways) that apprentices who had taken the Technical High School course should be allowed to start their apprenticeship at a later age than fifteen years in the Railway Department. To that request a reply w-as received by the board last night that the primary purpose for which apprentices were engaged in the department was the training of tradesmen, and the department’s experience had proved that the existing regulation governing the age and educationall qualifications of candidates for entry to the service as apprentices fully met the requirements of the department. Mr McVilly regretted, therefore, that he could not see his way to make any alterations in the direction suggested. The board decided to request the local members of Parliament to take the matter up with the Minister tor Railways.
