MARINE DEPARTMENT
THE NEW SECRETARY,
MR G. C. GODFREY APPOINTED.
Mr George Crosbie Godfrey, Assistant Under-Secretary for Public Works has been appointed Secretary of the Marine Department, in succession to Mr A. D. Park, who recently became Assistant Public Service Commissioner. Mr Godfrey first entered the Public Service in February, 1897, and is now 43 years of age. In 1901 he became private secretary to the then Minister for Pijblio Works and Marine, Sir William Hall-Jonea, and was with him during the three years when New Zea land’s principal shipping and seamen's legislation was placed on the Statute Book. He accompanied the Minister to England on two official visits. When Sir William became High Commissioner Mr Godfrey was appointed assistant chief clerk of the Public Works Department, was made chief clerk in 1914. and was promoted to the post of Assistant Under-Secretary on the retirement of Mr W. S. Short, on superannuation, in 1920. Mr Godfrey is an executive member of the Main Highway Board, and is also a member of the Stores Control Board and of the Office Accommodation Board. He saw active service in France, in tho Great War, being a member of the Second Brigade of Artillery.
