TECHNICAL EDUCATION
AUCKLAND’S GENEROSITY
SHOULD BE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO WELLINGTON. FULL ACKNOWLEDGMENT. In his report to the Wellington Technical College Board of Governors last night, the director (Mr J. H. Howell) has the following note under the heading. “Auckland Generosity” : “I hope no member of the board ha 6 been under the impression that i have ever wished to conceal the facts as to Auckland's generosity. They are, indeed, so well recognised that repetition of the facts would 6eem unnecessary. Our Mayor has himself, to my knowledge, mentioned publicly and recently at least twice, tne gift of £IO.OOO to tlie Technical College by the Auckland Savings Bank; and some time ago 1 presented to the board a comparison between the contributions to the technical colleges up to 1920, and mentioned, according to the figures given me by the then director (Mr George) that the contributions in Auckland amounted to £12,797, including a grant of £IO,OOO from the Auckland Savings Bank, as compared with over £18,900 for Wellington, counting tlie net contribution from the City Council at £II,OOO, i.e., £15,000, less £3IOO, the cost to the Government of the workshop buildings. I am very pleased to report another .instance of generosity to their Technical College on the part of the Auckland citizens, which I have recently learnt from the director (Mr Park); | and I venture to express the hope that this example will he a stimulus to some Wellington citizens to do likewise. “Two friends, who, I believe, were skilled workers in the building trade, Mr Binns and Mr Hindley. agreed that they ‘ could not do better than leave the money they had been able to save to the Technical College for its extension. These benefactors have recently died, and as a result of their wise generosity the Technical College has in hand, with Government subsidy,, a sum of nearly £6OOO towards its assembly hall. If we are to have this valuable addition to our own college in the near future, it can only be through similar generosity. 35
