ARBITRATION COURT
LABOUR DEPARTMENT APPEAL
The Arbitration Court is due to hold a sitting of the court at Weetport on November 20th, when the appeal by the Labour Department against the judgment of Mr Meldrum, S.M., will be determined.
The department prosecuted the Westport Coal Company, Ltd., at Denniston for an alleged breach of the enginedrivers’ award. A roadman and a nightwatchman, during the course of their duties, had to attend to a fan motor, and the department held that they should receive the pay of fan motor attendants as provided under the engine-drivers’ award. The magistrate held that they were substantially employed as a roadman and a nightwatchman, against which decision the department have appealed.
