Strand, of the 17th Battery, New Zeeland Artillery, that he has passed his examination for lieutenancy. Mr Quentin Donald, chairman of the Featherston County Council, was in Wellington yesterday, accompanied by Mre Donald. Mr Kw Gardner, of the Bank of New Zealand’s head office staff, Wellington, has gone to Whangarei to relieve Mr A. F. Thomson, manager of the local branch of the bank. Mr T. Mitchell, of the Auckland branch of the North Auckland Farmers* Co-operative, Ltd., has taken over temporarily the management of the company’s branch at Whangarei. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister for Education and Justice), who is at pr© sent visiting the South Island, is ex* peeted back in Wellington towards tht end of the week. Mr W. McEwen, railway coaching foreman, of Auckland, is under transfer to Marton Junction. Mr H. Low, a former ticket inspector on the Auckland section, at present coaching forman at Thomdoiu is to take Mr McEwen’6 place. Mr John I. Fox, organiser for the New Zealand Dairy Farmers* Union, has decided to spend several months on his farm, and at the end of that period will resume his regular duties. Mr Fox wao at one time a member of the Pahiatua Borough Council. A resolution expressing appreciation of the life work of the late Mr T. F. Cheeseman and recording sympathy with the relatives of the deceased scientist wae carried by the Auckland Citv Council. The resolution, moved by the Mayor, Mr J. H. Gunson, and earned by the members standing in silence, stated that the scientific work of Mr Cheeseman had been of the greatest value to the Dominion and to science generally, and it constituted a record of service and usefulness in this field which was without precedence in the Dominion. The esteem in which the late Mr B. W. Gibbs was held was amply demonstrated at his funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon. The attendance, which was a very large one, included Mr J. F. Mills, Mr Wagg (manager), and other representatives of E. W. Mills and Co., also many of his late fellow travellers, who came from long distances to be present. The Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association being also well represented. The service at the Basilica, which was crowded, *as conducted bv the Very Ber. Father Smyth, S.M.. assisted by the Very Bev. Dean Begnault, S.M., was a most impressive one. The "Dead March’* being played as the cortege left the church. Many beautiful floral tributes were received from Messrs E. W. Mills and staff, Commercial Travellers, and others. He leaves a widow and daughter to moam his loss. The death occurred at Hastings of M t Charles Lindsay Mackersey, a well-known business and sporting figure throughout the Dominion. Mr Mackersey had been suffering from heart trouble. Born in Victoria ip. 1858, the deceased wae educated at Warrn&mbool, and came to New Zealand with his father, the late Mf John Mackersey. in 1871. The father and son> operated the Lake Station at Waipukurau for a number of years, but the property was sold in 1903, and the late Mr Mackersey, accompanied by bis brother, 1 Mr L. W. Mackersey, took an extended trip round the world. They returned in 190*. At one time the late Mr Mackersey was a member of the WaiK pawa and Patangata County Councils. ; thp Waipukurau Hoad Board.'and County Council, member of the Hawke’s Bar Licensing Board, on the committee of [ the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society, and . n member of the Hawke’s Bar Jockey Club. He was an active member of the r Farmers* Union, and prominent in all ; kind» of sport. He was one of the found* . ers and president of the Hawke’s Bay Boring Association, and as a rifle shot held the championship of New Zealand for one year. He leaves a widow, a daughter of the late Mr T. Rostock, of Hixnri. Victoria, four sons. Messrs Lindsay. Norman. Leslie, and Iran Mackereey. and two daughters. Mrs Noel Bearaand Miss K. Mackersev, of Welling* ton.
