brougham hihl tourney. PRANCE BROTHERS' FEAT. Saturday saw the commencement of the Brougham Hill Tennis Club’s annual handicap tourney. The excellence of the handicapping was manifest, and, though conditions were not ideal, play was of a high order. The most notable match of the day was that in which L. <»™<l D. G. France (owe 10) beat Penlington and T. S. Williams (16), 50 —38. Both defeated men are members of the club's junior team, and Williams won the men's handicap event at the last metropolitan tourney. Penlington-Williams were leading thefr opponents By one more than their handioap when the score was in the thirties; but after that the France brothers rapidly overhauled them, scoring almost 40 points against the few won by their opponents. COMBINED HANDICAP DOUBLES. V. and Miss Thwaites (12) beat H. V. Howe-Miss Stevens (8), 40—84. THORNDON CLUB OPENING POSTPONED. Owing to the wet weather, the opening of the Thorndon Lawn Tennis Club, which was to have taken place on Saturday, has been postponed until the 27th instant.
