MARRIAGE INVALID
PRIEST NOT AUTHORISED. GUILTY OF A FELONY. Australian and N.Z Cable Association. (Received October 21, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 20. During the hearing of the petition of Cicely Percival for the restitution of conjugal rights, it was given in evidence that the marriage ihad been solemnised by a Roman Catholic priest, who was not authorised to do so. The suit was dismissed, and the marriage was declared invalid. Father Grogan, in evidence, said that though he was not authstfised he agreed to marry the parties, who were members of a touring theatrical company, “to save dhipwrecking tho petitioner’s morals and faith.” He told the parties they must be civilly married before a registrar at the earliest possible moment.
The judge, who warned the priest before he gave evidence, pointed out that an unauthorised person who performed a marriage ceremony committed l a felony.
