Interviewed by the “Yorkshire Post ” he warmly approved the group settlement scheme. The “New York Times.” in an editorial contrasting the Australian and New Zealand selective immigration policies with the present haphazard American restrictive measure and partly unrestricted ,imimigrafiten, says: “They learned a lesson from the United States. They are determined to exclude all persons who are unlikely to be rapidly and thoroughly assimilated. The council of the Midland Manufacturers’ Association passed a resolution in favour of the mutual Imperial preference, and expressing the opinion that a scientific tariff would increase the export trade. Sir Robert Horne, speaking at Glasgow, suggested to the Government, as a remedy for unemployment, that instead of applying £40,000,000 to debt redemption it should develop some great scheme by which to enrich and develop the dominions, and at the same time provide lasting benefit to Britain’s teeming millions.
