MEDICATED WINE
PROSECUTION AT DUNEDIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, October 19. In the Police Court, William Alichal Wilkinson pleaded not guilty to a charge of selling a bottle of Hall’s wine without a license to do eo. It was admitted that the medicated wine seized by the police contained over 10 per cent, proof spirit, and the police contended that where a man was not a registered chemist, he had no right to sell the wine. The defence contended that there was nothing in the licensing Act that made it illegal for a chemist, qualified or otherwise, to sell Hall’s wine. The defendant admitted that he was not registered. He sold medicated wine for medicinal purposes, and counsel quoted the decision in an earlier case that it was not illegal to sell medicated wine so long as the seller was satisfied the purchaser bought it for medicine. Decision was reserved.
