PORT CHARGES

AND LIGHT DUES HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMAN EXPLAINS POSITION. AUCKLAND STATEMENTS. Referring to the article in the “New Zealand Times” of the 17th instant, on the subject of port charges and light dues, it is reported that the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Foard has stated that the Government fee of (kl per ton for light- dues amounts practically to the total charge in Auckland for all sendees. This assertion does not wholly set out the position, and is ant to be misleading. RATES* ON VESSELS. The rate ori* vessels arriving from overseas (it was explained) i« 6d per ton net in respect of the first arrival in New Zealand on any voyage, and thereafter per ton net in respect of each arrival at any port on the coast on the same' voyage. Therefore, if an overseas vessel makes Auckland her first and last port of call, as Mr Mackenzie says many vessels do, the total charge made by the Marine Department for light dues in respect of the two calls at Auckland would be at the rate of 6fd per ton, whereas it might reasonably be inferred from Air Mackenzie’s statement that the charge is Gd per ton for each call, making a total of Is tier ton. If the- vessel did not call at Auckland first, but called there subsequently in the course of the voyage, the charge at Auckland would be only Ad per ton for each call. LIGHT DUES. As regards the statement at the head of the article that the light dues equal tho port charges; if a vessel from overseas called at, say, eight ports on the same voyage to complete discharge and loading, the total charge made by the Marine Department for light dues would be at the rate of 9£d per ton, being 6d for the first port-, and for each of the other ports. On these figures, and those supplied by Air Alackenzie as the charges imposed by the Auckland Harbour Board, the * light dues charged at Auckland are by no means equal to the board’s charges, and the total light dues for the voyage represent only a small proportion of the total charges imposed' by the various harbour boards.
