CANTERBURY MARKETS

NO SALE FOR POTATOES. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, October 19. Business is quiet in all lines at present and tho prospects are that it will remain so until after carnival week. Tho potato market is in a bad way, orders being few and far between. It appears that tempted by late prices merchants sent north more than the market could absorb, tho result being that no further supplier are likelv to be required for £ome time. A Christchurch merchant wired his agent to sell at the best price ho could! from off the wharf at Auckland, and received the discouraging reply that the age-nt was unable to sell at any figure. Another merchant states, how- I ever, that a line was sold to-day of j Dakotas on a basis of XS 15s f.0.b.5.i., while some f.a.q.'s were disposed of at .£8 under similar conditions. Generally speaking, speculative business is now 'a iltinjg of the past, merchants getting from farmers nhat small lots they require. to meot orders. Fowl wheat is, if anything, a little easier, and is being offered at 5s per bushel f.0.b., sacks extra, which adds Is Id to the price. A lot of spring threshing is now bcinp done of white and red clover, and a fair amount is offered by farmers. The 'bulk of the reel clover is" of poor quality, being very full of discloured seed, due to rain arid being, therefore, of no groat value. Choice red clover is worth up to 9£d and white clover (Tree from suckling seed) up to Is 2d per lb. In cocksfoot practically no business is being done, but prices are firm at: late rates in view of the advance in Danish seed at Home, which is equivalent to 97s 6d per cwt landed in the Dominion. Cabled advices, received to-day, report that 'business for next year is on a basis of 70* per quarter, e.i.f., London, for partridge peas.
