VALUE OF MOTOR TRANSPORT
FEEDERS TO RAILWAYS. According to a statement made at the annual meeting of fhe Australian Automotive Industries, fhe motor trade in the Commonwealth now has an annual turnover exceeding .£6,000,000, whilst the Commonwealth collected yearly from the motoring community in duties the big sum of <£1,500,000. The Acting-Federal Prime Minister, Dr Earle Page, who was amongst the guests, made some pertinent remarks in. reference to the importance of the motor in the development of Australia; in fact, Dr Page voiced his opinion that inland motor transport is more important to Australia than any other country in the World. The Acting-Prime Minister confessed to being a pioneer motorist. He had owned a ca,r in 1302, when a journey without a mishap caused a ear-owner to write to every other car-owner in Australia and tell him of the miracle. The motor would feed*, and not displace, wie railways, but there must also be good roads. He wanted To see more motorists, as then they would get more and better roads.
