LABOUR AGITATED

AT GANDHI’S IMPRISONMENT, At a meeting of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee the following resolution was passed concerning the imprisonment of Gandhi: “As members of a community seeking by means of self-government under free institutions to bequeath to individuals the right and the ability for self-expression, we believe that individual freedom of thought, whether .uttered in speech or writing, must be safeguarded and cherished, together with the right of public meeting and free intercourse. But we see in the imprisonment of Mr Gandhi, the Indian advocate of self-government ’ for India, a menace and a challenge to all theec ideals. We appeal, therefore, to the British Labour Party to intervene on behalf of 3lr Gandhi, and to make such representations as will result in his speedy release. Such intervention we conceive to be necessary for the safeguarding of democracy everywhere, but particularly on behalf of all Britis* dominions.”
