RADIUM CAMPAIGN
SBON IN FULL SWING .MAYOR OUTLINES DISTRICTS TO BE SERVED. “NO ONE IMMUNE.” Yesterday the Mayor, Mr R. A. Wright, made a statement outlining the progress of the campaign to raise the money necessary to provide a Radium Institute. The Radium Institute will be at "Wellington, and it will t>e to serve nil that middle belt of New Zealand bounded on the North by a lino from New Plymouth to Napier, via Tatimarunui, and on the South by thfr Southern boundaries of the Mailboroueh and Nelson provinces. CAMPAIGN IN HAND. The Genera! Committee that lias tho campaign in hand recently appointed a small committee to formulate a plan of campaign The latter committee met last Monday night, and drafted recommendations" that will be submitted to the General Committee at a meeting to be held at 7.30 p.m. on Friday next in the Mayor’s room. “These recommcnciations,” said the Mayor yesterday, “make provision tor raising immediately £IO.OOO, which, with the Government subsidy, will provide the money required. Anticipating the approval of the General Committee, it is proposed to wait on some of our leading wealthy citizens immediately, with a view to launching the campaign with substantial contribution. We are now open tc receive contributions. Some contributions have been received already, including one of £SO from Messrs Cooper and Co., and another of £2l from Messrs L. T. Watkins. Ltd.
“It is expected to have the stheme in full swing in about a week’s time, ana no difficulty is anticipated in raising the necessary amount in the course of tho next few months. FURTHER AFIELD. Mr Wright then referred to tho wide boundaries of the appeal district, and said that it was confidently hoped that the campaign would be taker* up effectively throughout the three Southern. provinces and the southern portions of Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay, within the limits stated. All persona within this contributing area would have exactly the same rights to treatment at or’ by the proposed Radium Institute as any citizen of Wellington would have. There being equality of benefit, there was a common ground for appeal for funds to establish tho Radium Institute. So tho campaign should bo as welcome in one district as in another.
“No district and no individual,*' said Mr Wright finally, “is immune from the attacks of cancer. The enemy is au advancing enemy, and a common and united defence is required. The course is so human ana so ncble that it must awaken the generous response of every man and womar in the community.”
