RAILWAY DAMAGED
WASH-OUT ON HUTT UXE. GAP IN RAILWAY WALL NEAR PETONE. Throughout yesterday surfacemen patrolled the railway line between Kaiwarra and Pet-one. The gale had raised a big sea on the harbour, and waves daubed against the railway protection wall and over on to the rails. The double line was kept in operation during the day, but after the 9.30 o’clock train from Petone had gone through last night it was discovered that the heavy pounding the wall ,was receiving was having a detrimental effect on the structure. At 10 o’clock word was received at the traffic office that approximately a chain of the wail had been carried away about two miles north, of N-gahauranga, and the incoming train which is scheduled to leave Petone at 10.30 o’clock was in consequence held Up at that station for some time, being eventually dispatched on the inner line under a “pilot.” Gangs of men were soon on the scene to effect repairs, hut on account of the darkness and the heavy sens it waa impossible to accurately estimate the extent of the damage last night. Work was to be continued, however, through the night, and should the gap be not repaired this morning, the earlier trains will proceed in each direction on the inner line under a pilot.
