ATLANTIC SALMON FRY

STOCKING WANGANUI RIVER. MOST SUITABLE IN DOMINION. Per Press Association. N TAUMARUNUI, October 16. Mr L. T. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, at present is visiting Ivakrhi Hatchery, near Taumorunui, for the purpose of liberating half a million Atlantic frv. which have been successfully hatched by Mr H. Bebbington, who is in charge at Ivakahi. Xheso will bo liberated in the Whakapapa, Kakahi, Waimarino, Punga Punga, and other srtreams, which flow into the Wanganui. Already Mr Bobbing ton has liberated 200,000 fry, and liberations of the remainder may be held up for a few days on account ot the state of the' rivers, which are swollen by recent rains. Wanganui river is the first in the North Island to be stocked with Atlantic salmon, and Mr Ayson expresses the opinion that it is the most suitable in the Dominion, and considers it an angler’s paradise. He predicts that onoe the river is stocked there will bo no end of tourists to the district from all part© of the Dominion and Australia. _

Mr Ayson believes in intensive stocking, and intends to concentrate on the Wanganui River for the next eight years. He hopes to liberate over half a million fry annually.
