DAIRY CONTROL
•‘TO.BE ORS NOT TO BE ? ” DOMINION POLL CLOSES AT MIDDAY TO-DAY. LESS THAN THREE-FIFTHS? The indications are that the poll, which closes at midday to-day, on the question whether the Dairy Produce Export Control Act passed last session is to come into force or not, will he rather less than a throe-fifths poll. The number of sealed ballot-paper envelopes received up to last night by the cldef electoral officer, Wellington, totalled only some 30,000 of the 56,000 sent out, though, of course, a good many more may oe received before 12 noon to-day, when the poll definitely closes. This is the largest postal ballot yet held in New Zealand; but out of the great number of ballot-papers sent out to those entitled to vote only about 260 had to be re-directed, having been returned because the addresses supplied l when the names were sent in were insufficient. In some eases duplicate registration of voters has inadvertently occurred. Where possible these have been detected and corrected; but suppliers are, of course, entitled to only one vote, and if through any misunderstanding more than one ballot-paper has been marked and returned by the same voter, only one of the votes will be counted. None of the ballot-envelopes will be opened, of course, until the official count begins after noon to-day.
