THE BOYS

ROTARIANS WILL HELP A SCHOOLMASTER ON PRESENTDAY HOME LIFE. A NOTE OF WARNING. At yesterday’s Rotary Club luncheon, Mr C. C. Odlin mentioned that to-mor-row there will be held at Lower Hutt a conference for the purpose of considering means of doing something for the benefit of the boys of the city. The gathering, he said, will give the members of the club an opportunity of placing their views before the directors. Mr Hopkirk, president of the Headmasters’ Association, representatives of whom were guests of the club at the luncheon, said that if the schoolmasters could help the Rotarians in their work for the boys they ought to be very glad to do so. With the presentconditions of home life it was necessary for some to take an interest in the children. However, what was wanted was not a passing function, but a continuous effort. There were various ways, and several channels through which the club could help, and do the youth of Wellington a fine service. He suggested- that the Rotarians of Wellington might contribute towards the provision of picture films or other means of amusement for city schools. Mr Webb, a member of the Headmasters’ Association, remarked that he sometimes reflected on the number of children from his own school who reached the prison. Blame the child? No. He wanted to sound a note of warning. There was a danger of young people growing up to think that life waa a jaunty, jolly thing, and that there was no need for anything of a serious purpose at all. He was willing to help the club all he could in any effort it made on behalf of the boys.
