RUGBY FIXTURES
INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES COMMITTEE TO REPORT. "The last clause sums up the position,” said Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, last evening, when a letter was received from the Otago Rugby Union on the subject of inter-provincial fixtures. This letter read:—"The following recommendation was moved to the New Zealand Rugby Union management committee: "That all the unions of New Zealand be asked to curtail their interprovincial engagements, and thus tend to give a greater amount of play to club members. CUP SEASON TOO SHORT. "My committee consider that there is too much travelling, and that the sear son for club fixture* is being cut too short. We trust your committee will give this matter their earnest attention, as we are of opinion that this is a matter of \itai importance to the game.” "My committee would suggest that an opportunity be given to delegates at the next annual meeting to thoroughly discuss the matter.” Mr E. Little remarked that it was generally recognised that there wore too many representative fixtures.. In this matter the unions needed no lead from the parent body. They were quite able to do the same as Otago. NO POWER WHATEVER. Tho question resolved itself into a matter of how many matches they should play and what provinces . they should meet. He thought that the New Zealand Rugby Union had no power whatever in the matter. Mr W. S. Glenn: Things have been overdone. Mr Little: We will have to get back to the old style—the trfp north and the trip south. It was resolved to refer the matter to a committee for it to report at the annual meeting.
