PERPETUAL SMILE
DESPITE ALL MISFORTUNE. , PHILOSOPHIC PEOPLE. Australian, and N.Z. Cable Association TOKIO, October 13. The Sydney “Sun’s” special correspondent aboard the Australmount states that military parties are engaged in both Tokio and Yokohama in dynamiting the ruins of the buildings prior to rebuilding operations. Thousands of workmen are engaged in heaping the debris into vast mounds on the sides of the roadways. Though there are a few complaints, the Government seem* to have handled the situation creditably.' The whole Administration was turned upside down, and the wonder is that the Government did not collapse in panic, instead of systematically organising immense relief work. The Japanese take the position philosophically. “Through all gleams the perpetual Japanese smile. From Cabinet Ministers to workmen on the buildings and temporary refuges, all greet you with a ©mile.”
