FOOD AT FAMINE PRICES SHOPS LOOTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received October 14, o 5 p.m.) COLOGNE, October 13. Frequent outbreaks and looting of Ghops occurred to-day. Many shops have been closed, and others barricaded. The principal cafes are empty, in consequence of the impossible prices. Lorries going to market were held up and looted The outbreaks are due to the extraordinary fluctuations in the Quotations of the mark. Frantic speculation resulted in famine prices being placed on commodities. The Fiench authorities have proclaimed a state of siege in Kreuzn&ch, owing to the looting of shops. U NEAIPLOY ABLE “TO V An earlier message stated: Mobs throng the streets, after breaking shop windows, and attempting to plunder in matrv parts of the city. They consist mainfy of the same unemployable “toughs” who were most prominent in the sanguinary Separatist affray at Duseeldorf on September 30th. The possibility that they include armed Separatists increased the danger of the situation. Unemployed who are engaged in emergency work are co-operating with the rioters. The British troops are confined to barracks, and are prepared to meet emergencies. Places of entertainment, restaurants, and cafes are closed, Similar riots occurred at Solingen, where a number of slight casualties were caused by revolver shots. Hitherto 11 people are reported to have been killed, and 3o injured in unemployment disturbances at Solingen, whach continue. Two thousand unemployed besieged the Town Hall at Horchst. The German police used their arms, and one was killed and 10 injured. Trouble is also reported in Cologne, Hamburg, and Essen districts.
