SAFE ON SHORE
MISSING MEN RETURN. MAROONED ON AX ISLAND Per Press Association. TAURANGA. October 13. Anxiety in regard to the safety of Messrs Evans, Morgan, and Dickson, who left Tauranga on Wednesday afternoon in a launch to go fishing, was relieved this morning when one of the missing men returned from Matakana Island. He reported that about 6 o'clock on Wednesday night a sea came aboard and swept the ropes overboard, one fouling the propeller. This was got clear, but meanwhile the launch had filled, and the engine would cot go. The boat went a* ho re in about aix feet of water, and the men got ashore safely. The party had only a loaf of bread and a pound of butter, and no word had been heard of them since their departure. Yesterday some fishermen saw a boat on the beach at Matakana Island, near Kati Kat*~ harbour entrance. and n dinghy on the beach about half a mile away, but there was no sign of the men. The fishermen wore unable to get on to the beach owing to tbe breakers, hut a party later wont to the island, and endeavoured to reach the stranded boat overland, but have not yet returned.
Wednesday night waa very “dirtyJ* there being heavy rain and wind. The party left the harbour when other boat* were returning for shelter.
