POLICEMAN ASSAULTED
A CITY INCIDENT. YOUNG MAORI FINED. It did not pay a young Maori named John Douglas Stark to allow alcohol to interfere with Els reasoning powers, for as a result of disorderly behaviour whilst drunk on Friday night, the State coffers benefited to the amount of £9, which amount was the sum total of several fines the accused was ordered to pay at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, before Air W. G. Riddell, S.M. The attention of Constable Bennett was drawn to riotous behaviour on the part of Stark, who, when accosted, struck the officer on the jaw. The reveller was arrested, however, with the aid of Sergeant Pender, consequently making his appearance at court. For disorderly behaviour whilst drunk he was fined £l, in default seven days' imprisonment; and further fines of £5, in default one month’s imprisonment for the assault, and £3, in default 17 days’ imprisonment. The Use of obscene language made the lapse a rather expensive one.
